How to Choose a Self-Defense System

You’ve likely heard many claims: “I teach military-based self-defense!” “I teach police-based self-defense!” “I teach kung fu-based self-defense!” But how often do you hear, “I’ll show you how to make a six-figure income from teaching self-defense?”

Not often, I’m sure.

Finding a solid self-defense system is relatively easy. Any brown belt can teach you how to escape a headlock or defend against a gun.

But finding a self-defense BUSINESS SYSTEM that can generate serious income is another matter entirely. Teaching self-defense might be straightforward, but making money at it is where the real challenge lies.

Less than 1% of professional martial artists know how to earn six figures annually from teaching self-defense.

If you want to be part of that elite group, you need to ask the right questions about any self-defense system you’re considering:

  1. Do you, as the organization leader, earn your income from teaching self-defense or from certifying others to teach your system?

    • Understand whether the focus is on generating revenue through certification or through actual teaching.
  2. What is your background in generating income as a self-defense instructor?

    • Don’t just ask about who you trained with or what system you teach. Ask about your track record in generating income.
  3. How comprehensive is your curriculum?

    • Do you offer programs for:
      • Active Shooter
      • Teen Safety
      • Real Estate Safety
      • Anti-Bullying
      • Law Enforcement Self-Defense
      • Self-Defense for Kids
      • Self-Defense for Adults
      • Ten-Week Academies
    • How are these programs supported?
  4. How is your curriculum supported?

    • Do you provide:
      • Full curriculum manuals
      • Videos of program classes
      • Program-specific marketing materials?
  5. How will I market my self-defense programs?

    • Do you offer:
      • Marketing ads
      • Marketing videos
      • Presentation scripts
      • Upsell strategies?
  6. What kind of support can I expect?

    • Do you provide:
      • Executive Coaching Videos
      • Facebook Live Coaching Videos
      • Phone call support?
  7. Do you help elevate my business above local competition?

    • Do you provide:
      • A branded, stand-alone website
      • Branded apparel for a professional look
      • Branded manuals and student handouts?

As far as I know, there is only one self-defense system that can answer all these questions with a resounding, YES! COBRA-Defense is the Official Self-Defense Business System of the Martial Arts Teachers’ Association (MATA) for a reason. It’s proven to work.
