It is imperative to recognize that student service is just as important as martial arts skills when it comes to running a successful school. We define student service as making the process of being a student as easy as possible. This does not mean making the exams easy but rather accommodating student schedules to improve attendance and satisfaction.

Here are seven steps to a successful schedule:

  1. Align with School Hours: Schedule the first children’s class about 20 to 30 minutes after local elementary schools let out. This convenience makes it easier for students to attend, increasing the likelihood of consistent participation.

  2. Limit Belt Levels per Class: Combine no more than three belt levels in one class. Ideally, two levels are better. This approach prevents beginners from feeling overwhelmed and ensures advanced students remain engaged.

  3. Separate by Age and Rank: Tailor classes to different age groups and skill levels. Young children, teenagers, and adults have different needs and preferences. Balancing age-specific classes helps meet the unique needs of each demographic.

  4. Optimize Class Duration and Breaks: Schedule short breaks if your staff is small to address student needs. Larger teams can offer back-to-back classes, maximizing class availability. Adjust class lengths based on age and rank, ensuring sessions end while students are still enthusiastic.

  5. Focus on Class Quality Over Length: For adults, 45-minute classes are generally effective, while advanced students may benefit from longer sessions. The key is maintaining high-quality, engaging classes rather than extending class durations.

  6. Implement Assigned Class Times: Instead of allowing students to attend classes at will, assign specific class times. This approach ensures better attendance and accountability, making it easier to track progress and maintain a structured learning environment.

  7. Plan for Growth: Design your schedule to accommodate future growth. Avoid limiting your schedule to your current student base; instead, plan for a capacity that will support expansion. An inadequate schedule can hinder your ability to increase your student body.

By applying these strategies, you’ll enhance student satisfaction, retention, and overall growth in your martial arts school. Regularly review and adjust your schedule to align with the evolving needs of your students and the growth of your school.
