Life as an Orphan Black Belt: Advancing Without an Instructor or Style Organization

Losing your instructor or style organization can leave you feeling adrift as a black belt. I faced this challenge when my instructor died in a plane crash in 1982, leaving me a 3rd dan black belt.

Fortunately, I was taken under the wing of the legendary Joe Lewis, who promoted me to 4th through 8th degree before his passing in 2012.

Not all orphaned black belts are as fortunate. Some find their instructors leaving the arts, organizations falling apart, or struggle to make it on their own.

If you’re wondering, “How can I advance in rank with MATA?” here’s how you can continue your journey.

Options for Advancing in Rank

  1. Long-Distance Advancement:

    • You can submit videos of your practice for review. The specifics of what you need to video will vary, but successful completion will earn you a certificate of rank by mail.
  2. In-Person Testing and Promotion:

    • Invite me to your school for a personal test and promotion. This option allows you to host seminars—such as on bullying, kickboxing, or self-defense—while I assess your rank during a special belt exam. It’s an opportunity to create excitement around your promotion and engage with your community.
