The Truth About the After-School Business

Here’s the reality. If you’re in the after-school business or thinking about getting into it, you’ve got to play by the rules. And those rules are getting stricter.

Take a look at some of the recent headlines:

  • "11 Area Day Cares Have Violated DCF Transportation Protocol."
  • "Westside Ends Popular After-School Program."
  • "After-School Operator Says Rules are 'Unfair,' Authorities Disagree."
  • "DCF Accused of Phoning It In."

The Department of Children and Families (DCF) and other agencies have their hands full. They’re dealing with serious issues like child abuse and abduction.

So, after-school programs haven’t always been top of their list. But all that’s changing.

Why Are After-School Programs Facing Tougher Scrutiny?

Recently, a high-profile, non-compliant after-school program in Tampa, Florida was shut down. That case has sparked a ripple effect. Now, DCF and authorities in other states, like California, are cracking down.

Schools using similar business models are getting cease and desist orders. And here’s the kicker—competitors could use this against you.

A simple anonymous call to the authorities, claiming your school is following the same non-compliant plan, could lead to stress, legal bills, and possibly the end of your program.

Avoid Falling into the Trap of After-School 'Experts'

Before you sign up with any so-called after-school program guru, ask yourself these questions:

  • How long have they been in business? If it’s less than a decade, think twice. Would you trust someone who can’t even sustain their own program?
  • Do they check compliance first? A legitimate business expert will contact your state’s authorities before taking your money, ensuring the business plan is compliant.
  • Do they have real experience? You want someone with at least 25 years of running a compliant after-school program, not a newbie trying to make a quick buck.
  • Have they helped others? They should have a proven track record of helping hundreds, if not thousands, of school owners launch compliant and successful after-school programs.
  • Do they have a reputation for fighting for you? Look for someone with experience dealing directly with DCF in courtrooms and offices, advocating for school owners.
