In this quick article, we'll go over a proven strategy that is free and can be re-cycled forever.

Local TV News is scrambling for viewership. It's a good idea to visit their websites and get a sense of what they are looking for. They are looking for people and events to profile.

One common segment is the Local Hero.

Here is a perfect example. Look at this feature on Marc Wilkes, right here in Tampa Bay.

Imagine being featured on TV as a Local Hero. That is the media designating you as the Top of the Class. Nothing is more powerful to build your school’s reputation, attract new students, and position yourself as the go-to expert in self-defense and personal development.

The secret? Local media needs stories like yours! With social media dominating the landscape, news stations are eager to highlight local residents and events that engage the community and attract viewers.

Take it from me, who was well-known for decades as Mr. Karate in St. Petersburg—media stories can be a game-changer.

Action Steps

  1. Visit and bookmark all local media websites.
  2. Look for articles that you could either be the person profiled, or an expert contributor.
  3. Create a Media List with reporters and editors' name, email, phone, title, publication, and their "beat" or topics they focus on.
  4. Start with the smaller pubs. Send an email to the reporter and introduce yourself. "Hi Joe, I saw your article on the bully problem at XYZ High. I've been teaching anti-bully seminars and workshops for years. I'd be happy to help you with some insights and strategies that your readers would find helpful.  Just let me know. Here are some sample articles..."

The "Here are some sample articles.." is key.

Reporters are much more comfortable with someone who has already been used/endorsed/validated by another media outlet. If you don't have them yet, write articles on your blog and social media about local crimes, bullying etc.. You do have a blog that you are writing articles for, right?

If not, start today by writing an article on a local crime or situation that your training would have mitigated. Reporters are looking for those experts, but they can't find them unless you put yourself out there.
